Green Sofa Colour Restoration

Here are some green leather sofas, a three seater, a two seater and a single seater arm chair. They were suffering from a little colour loss and had some cracks and tears on them. Along with a hole from what looked like a cigarette burn and a large rip on one of the arms.

The above images show the sofas before our technicians had done any work to them.

The Beginning

Upon arrival one of the technicians first set up all equipment to begin the restoration. While doing this the other technician carefully mixes a colour to match the sofas. First one technician begins to clean the sofas using a scrubbing brush and leather cleaner. They do this beginning with the single seater arm chair also using a lint free cloth to wipe away all dirt extracted from the chairs.

Meanwhile the other technician stitches together the large rip in the arm of the two seater sofa. This is done using a curved needle and cotton carefully sewing the leather back together.

Once this has been completed the technician begins to assist the other in cleaning the sofas. After they have all been cleaned they prep them. This is also done using a lint free cloth and leather prep which is carefully applied onto the cloth and rubbed over the sofa. This removes the manufacturers seal and any pesticides on the leather.

Repairing The Damage

Now the sofas are fully cleaned and prepped the technicians focus their attention to the areas in particular which are suffering. These areas have filler applied to them using a spatula. This then fills the cracks and allows the sofa to become a smooth surface.

The above image shows the technician drying the filler to ensure the surface is dry enough to continue working on. Once the filler has been applied it is dried using a hairdryer. It is then sanded down using 320mm sandpaper to remove any large amounts of filler that has been over applied. After that the technician uses 400mm sandpaper to fully smoothen the surface. After this is done the technicians move their attention to the tears and holes.

In order to repair the tears in the leather the technician applies leather glue to ensure the leather is once again connected. After this has been done the technician dries the glue using a hairdryer and then applies a cool block. This block inflicts cold upon the repair to ensure it is now ready to continue being worked on.

In order to repair the hole in the leather the technician fills it with leather filler as it’s size and depth is only small. Once it has been filled the technician applies a little more filler to the surrounding area. After this has been dried the technician sands it down ensuring it is smooth following the same process with the two types of sand paper.

Colour Restoration

Colour Restoration

Finally the technicians can move on to the colour restoring of the sofas. They go over the sofas with the green colour they mixed. Applying the green to a lint free cloth and rubbing this on the sofas in a circular motion. Once a green base coat has been applied to the sofas the technicians begin to apply the green leather dye using the air brush.

They do this by spraying evenly spread thin coats of colour onto the sofa being careful not to overspray onto the wooden areas. In between each layer being applied the technician dry them with a hairdryer. Once enough layers have been applied covering all of the filler and colour loss areas the technicians can move on. Lastly the technicians apply a coat of lacquer over all of the sofas.

After Completion

Once completed the sofas needs to be left for at least 1 hour until it is dry enough to touch. This is if the customer wishes to have a closer look at the repair however we do not recommend it. The sofas should then not be used for approximately 48 hours. This depending on how much colour and filler is applied during the repair and on how much damage there was.

We advise that all leather is cleaned and protected every six months. This allows the leather to stay clean and fresh. The protection cream gives that extra barrier between the wear and tear and the sofa.
