Car Bolster Repairs
Leather Repairs
The process of repairing damage to a car bolster when the leather is damaged is always the same.
First the technician uses a lint free cloth and leather cleaner to clean the damaged area to ensure there is no dirt embedded in the repair. After the area has been cleaned the technician preps it using leather prep and another lint free cloth to remove the manufacturers coating and any pesticides on the leather. Now the technician used sandpaper to sand down the area just to make sure that it is all smooth. Next the technician can begin to apply colour to the damage. He does this using an air brush to spray over the scuffed area. Once the area has been coloured the technician applied the final coat of lacquer to seal the restoration.
Stitching Repairs
Similarly the process of a stitching repair is always the same when repairing a burst seam.
Our technician uses a curved needle and cotton to stitch the bolster seam back together. However it can often be very difficult to conduct as it is hard to get the needle through the leather. Therefore the technician has to use pliers to assist him. This is known in the trade as slip stitching using a special curved needle. Also allowing us to sew from the outside of the car seat. However this leaves the stitching invisible to the bolster as it remains inside.
Curing Times
If a repair is done that requires colour to be applied to the leather then the area in which the colour has been applied needs to be kept out of use for an amount of time.
Once completed the area needs to be left for at least 1 hour until it is dry enough to touch. This is if the customer wishes to have a closer look at the repair however we do not recommend it. The area should then not be used for approximately 48 hours. This depending on how much colour and filler is applied during the repair and on how much damage there was.
We advise that all leather is cleaned and protected every six months. This allows the leather to stay clean and fresh. The protection cream gives that extra barrier between the wear and tear and the car seat.
Cleaning Kits
Cleaning kits are always recommended after every repair. This to help enable you to maintain your leather from future damage. Please feel free to ask any questions they are happy to give you help and guidance that you may require.
