On this magnolia sofa the customer had noticed a scratch located in the head area. Upon the technicians arrival the technician was able to determine that the scratch was in fact body perspiration.
After sanding down the scratch to gain a smooth surface the technician has sanded away some more of the leather. This is where the body perspiration was sitting underneath the leather and it was awaiting peeling off.
Beginning The Repair
Once the technician had sanded down she then uses leather prep to clean the damaged area. This to ensure there is no contamination underneath the repair about to go ahead.
We apply a base coat of leather dye by hand using a lint free cloth. Furthermore this allows the dye to get into the grain of the leather which allows a better bond with the leather. We dry this off using a hair dryer to allow the areas to be continued to be worked on. After this has been cleaned the technician starts to build up layers of filler. This allows the damaged area to remain at the same height as the rest of the cushion. After each layer the technician will continue to use sand paper to sand down the filler. This ensuring it is not applied to heavily and does not leave any lumps in the repair. Each layer of filler applied is dried with a hair dryer. Then cooled down to remove all heat from the body perspiration damaged area with a cool block.
Once the damaged area is smooth the technician then begins to spray leather dye over it using the air brush. The colour is built up by thin layers each carefully dried with a hair dryer before another layer is applied. Finally once the layers have been built up the last layer of colour is applied. It’s evenly spread across the panel to ensure the repaired area correctly colour matches to the rest of the sofa.
The technician applies the final layer onto the repaired area. This is of the lacquer which is used to seal the repair. Once completed the area needs to be left for at least 1 hour until it is dry enough to touch. This is if the customer wishes to have a closer look at the repair however we do not recommend it. The area should then not be used for approximately 48 hours. This depending on how much colour and filler is applied during the repair and on how much damage there was.
We advise that all leather is cleaned and protected every six months. This allows the leather to stay clean and fresh. The protection cream gives that extra barrier between the wear and tear and the sofa.
